Hazel Pinckley Parnell

Mrs. Hazel Pinckley Parnell, age 94 of Jackson, TN, passed away peacefully on July 20, 2013 at Alexandria Place Assisted Living Facility in Jackson, TN.

Funeral services for Mrs. Parnell will be held on Monday, July 22, 2013 at 2 p.m. at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Jackson. Interment will follow in Ridgecrest Cemetery.

Pallbearers to serve will be Bill Parnell, John Daniel Parnell, Fancher Sargent, Kent Crouch, Larry Elgin, and Sammy Elgin.

She was born on September 15, 1918 in Roellen, TN, the seventh of eight children born to LillieMae Bessent Pinckley and Samuel Henry Pinckley.

After graduating high school in Dyersburg, she went to beauty school in Memphis. Upon completion, she opened the Neva Hazel Beauty Shop on Court Square in Dyersburg.

She was a war-time bride marrying John Obie on September 2, 1942. They celebrated 57 years of marriage. After WWII they made their home in Dyersburg and Union City and finally moving to Jackson in 1957.

She was a long time member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church where she taught Sunday School and was active in the women's ministry.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Obie and her parents and siblings.

She is survived by two sons, Johnny (Doris) Parnell of Jackson, TN and Randy (Frances) Parnell of Pikeville, TN; grandchildren, Carrie (Fancher) Sargent of Jackson, Bill (Beth) Parnell of Jackson, John Daniel Parnell of Pikeville, Jacqueline (Kent) Crouch of Nashville, and Jenny Parnell of Chattanooga; great grandchildren, Jack Sargent and Brody Parnell.

Visitation with the family will be held on Sunday, July 21, 2013 from 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. in the North Room of the North Chapel of George A. Smith and Sons Funeral Home. Visitation will resume on Monday, July 22, 2013 at 1 p.m., one hour prior to the service.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Alexandria Place Assisted Living for the excellent care they provided.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the First Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Jackson.
