Medina, TN - Alice Irene Mays Towater, age 94, a gracious and quietly independent Southern lady, died peacefully on Monday evening, November 11, 2013 while surrounded by her children. Her homegoing took place on the 74th anniversary of her marriage, November 11, 1939, to her late husband, Glen Harold Towater, Sr. They made their home on a farm in the Latham's Chapel Community.

Visitation is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Replogle-Lawrence Funeral Home in Medina, TN, with funeral services to be held in the Chapel at 1 p.m. Burial will follow in Latham's Chapel Cemetery, 135 Latham's Chapel Rd., Milan, TN. Officiating will be The Reverend Dwight Jackson of Morganfield, KY, nephew to Mrs. Towater, and her pastor, Reverend Tommy Stutts.

Mrs. Towater retired from Union University in 1988 after 18 wonderful years as assistant director of women's housing. She was the daughter of a Medina, TN farmer/landowner, the late Arthur Esmond Mays, who died in the beginning of The Great Depression. Mrs. Towater learned strength and endurance from her mother, the late Mattie Elizabeth "Lizzie" Bailey Mays, who as a young widow raised eight children.

Mrs. Towater was preceded in death by her seven siblings: Aline, Albert, Ray, Theodore, Edward, Stanley, and Ruth Mays (Mrs. Virgil Jackson). Mrs. Towater, too, became a widow at an early age. Her grandparents were the late Noah and Louanne Replogle Mays, and William and Alice Cole Bailey.

Mrs. Towater was the mother of Louise Towater Lynch-Mills (Robert) of Jackson and Memphis; Glen H. Towater, Jr. (Liz) of Alpharetta, GA; and Rita Towater Rutherford (Johnny) of Lavinia, TN. She loved her four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren: Kyle Lynch (Amy Goetchius), parents of Liberty Claire and Audie Dale Lynch of Lexington, KY; Ashley Towater Schubert (Kevin), parents of Caden and Kaylee Shubert of Belvidere, IL; Glen "Trey" Towater III (Dr. Laura Frick), parents of Glen H. Towater IV "Quade" of Decatur, GA; and Aja Romano of NY, NY.

Serving as Pallbearers are Kyle Lynch, Trey Towater, Scott Goetchius of Canby, OR, Matt Gay of Jackson, Larry and Kevin Willis of Medina.
