Harriet Nell (Kane) Sheppard

Harriet Nell Sheppard, 89, of Richmond, Va. and formerly of Hoopeston, IL. and Lafayette, died at 3:17 A.M. Monday, January 28, 2013 at Henrico Doctors Hospital in Richmond.

Born December 21, 1923 at Lafayette, IN, where her family owned and operated Kane's Print Shop, 401 S. 29 St., for many years. She was the daughter of Thomas and Jesse (Magley) Kane. Nell, as she was known, graduated from Jefferson High School and the Indiana Business College.

She married Darrell L. Sheppard on December 17, 1949, at Lafayette. He preceded her in death on March 4, 2003.

Nell is survived by two sons, Michael L. (Denise) Sheppard, of Champaign, Ill. and Timothy L. (Libby) Sheppard, of Madison; one daughter, Corinne K. (David) Nightlinger, of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Thomas J. Kane; and two sisters, Colleen (Tom) Herrick and Aloha (Art) Lorentsen.

Following the death of her brother, Nell donated the contents of Kane's Print Shop to Purdue University, where she was a member of the President's Council.

Nell was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hoopeston.

She enjoyed reading, shopping, and most importantly, spending time with her family.
