Beverly Joan Murtaugh, 80

B. Joan Murtaugh, 80, of Stockwell, died at 3 a.m. Sunday, November 25, 2012, at Creasy Springs Health Campus.

She was born December 7, 1931, to the late Merle R. and Mary A. Chaney Griffis. She was a graduate of Stockwell High School, Class of 1950. On May 1, 1954, she married Joseph M. Murtaugh at St. Mary's Cathedral. He passed away on May 3, 1983.

Joan worked at Hege's Café in Stockwell for years. She was also a cook at Meredith Hall, Purdue University.

She was a member of the Stockwell United Methodist Church, where she was active in the church.

Joan was a kind-hearted woman who loved her family unconditionally. She loved Stockwell, her neighbors, playing bingo and watching her grandchildren, participating in their activities. Joan was a member of the Stockwell Euchre Club for more than 50 years. As an avid sports fan, she was also known to assist the basketball referees. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends but will always remain in their hearts.

Surviving is a daughter, Mary Catherine (husband: Robert) "Kate" Scott, of Mulberry; son, Patrick T. (wife: Kathleen) Murtaugh, of West Lafayette; brother, Merle (Betty) Griffis Jr., of West Unity, Ohio; grandchildren, Dru J. (wife: Sarah) Scott and Addie R. Scott; step-grandchildren, Kalon (wife: Rachel) King, Kacie King (husband: Jason) Dunn and Kyle King; and step-great-grandchildren, RiLeigh King, Kaitlyn, Jackson Dunn and Wyatt King.

Preceded in death by a sister, Patricia A. Griffis Horney.

Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesday at Soller-Baker Lafayette Chapel. Funeral Service will be 11 a.m., Wednesday at Stockwell United Methodist Church; the Rev. Mark Berg officiating. Burial will be at Johnson Cemetery in Stockwell.
