Catharine E. "Betsy" Luhman, 86

Catharine E. "Betsy" Luhman, 86, passed away Friday, November 2, 2012, after a brief stay at Westminster Village, West Lafayette, IN. Born August 27, 1926 in Keokuk, IA, she was the daughter of George E. Davis and Katherine M. Davis.

Betsy attended Jefferson High School and graduated from Purdue University in 1948, where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was also a member of Chapter AY of P.E.O. Throughout her lifetime Betsy upheld the ideals of both Kappa Kappa Gamma and P.E.O. in her service to others and had a commitment to education, especially in the field of outdoor recreation. In 1992 she retired as Executive Director of the Lafayette Chapter of the American Red Cross. Previously she had served as Director of Christian Education at Central Presbyterian Church, Lafayette, IN; as Director of Camp Stronghold, Blackhawk Presbytery, Rockford, IL; as a Field Representative for Sycamore Council, Girl Scouts of America; and early in her career, as Craft Activities Director at First Presbyterian Church in Crown Point, Indiana. Betsy touched the lives of many throughout her lifetime with her patience, enthusiasm and unconditional support of other people. For over 50 years these attributes were epitomized in her positions as an Elder, Deacon, Sunday school teacher and youth leader at Central Presbyterian Church, Lafayette, and as a Red Cross Water Safety Instructor in Fort Wayne and Lafayette, IN.

Beyond her work, Betsy loved music. She attended Interlochen National Music Camp in 1944, sang in the Purdue Concert Choir, and played bassoon and violin in the Purdue Orchestra. In later years, she enjoyed entertaining friends as part of an informal harmonica quartet. She had a lifetime love of camping and recreation and nowhere was she happier than at her cottage on an island near Sioux Narrows on Lake of The Woods in Ontario, Canada. Betsy was also an avid reader and had a lifelong passion for gardening. Betsy's smile, laughter, and storytelling ability will be missed by both family and friends.

On May 14, 1948 she married William E. Luhman, to whom she was married until 1975. She is survived by her four children: David Luhman (wife Carol) of Lafayette, IN; Dori Moffatt (husband David) of Watertown, SD; Becky Salsbery (husband Keith) of Kokomo, IN and Jane Thompson (husband Eric) of Excelsior, MN; and ten grandchildren: Matthew Salsbery of Lafayette, IN; Amanda Isom, (husband Chris) of New Palestine, IN; Molly Orton (husband Steve) of Lincoln, NE; Jenny Rawson (husband David) of Lincoln, NE; Mark Moffatt (wife Jenna) of Salt Lake City, UT; Jeff Moffatt of Sioux Falls, SD; Kate Thompson, of Excelsior, MN; Scott Thompson of Minneapolis, MN; Adam Luhman of Lafayette, IN and Brian Luhman of Lafayette, IN.
