Forrest E. Platt

Forrest E. "Smokey" Platt, 91, of Lafayette, passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at IU Health Arnett Hospital. Born August 10, 1921 near Buck Creek, IN, he was the son of the late Elva and Margaret (Kuntzwiler) Platt. He was a graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. Smokey honorably served in the Army from 1942 to 1945, where he spent time in the Galapagos Islands.

His marriage was to Imogene Lou Dienhart on May 3, 1947 in Lafayette and she survives. He owned and operated the White County Roller Rink in Monticello for several years. Smokey retired from Lafayette Printing Company after 45 years and was pressroom foreman there for 27 years. He was a 70-year member and past commander of American Legion Post #11 where he served as the leader of the Elevenettes, an all girls marching drill team. He was also a member of the VFW #1154 where he was leader of the River City Marchers and the Monticello Lakettes. His Legion drill team earned a 2nd place in competition and his VFW team earned a 3rd place.

Surviving with his wife is a son, Dale Allen Platt of West Lafayette, a sister, Patricia Johnson of Mobile, AL, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Graveside service, with military honors, will take place at 2 p.m. on Monday at Elmwood Cemetery in Romney, IN, Celebrant Carla Ellis officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the .
