Helen R. Hockema

Helen R. Hockema, 88 of Lafayette Indiana, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Nov 18, 2013 at Cumberland Point, West Lafayette. She was the daughter of the late Jessie (DeGroot) and Peter Burkenpas.

Born in West Lafayette IN on August 16, 1925. She graduated from West Lafayette High School and attended Purdue University.

On April 18, 1947 she married the love of her life, Robert J. Hockema and they were married 52 years. He preceded her in death on June 9, 1999.

Helen worked in the hosiery department at L.S.Ayres at Market Square from 1963 to1988. She enjoyed her work, traveling, cooking and baking. She was an active member at the Christian Reformed Church, Lafayette Christian School, participating in Ladies Aid and the Christian School Bazaar.

Surviving are her children, daughter Linda Holliday (husband Ken) of Playa Del Rey, CA, son Robert (Bob) A. Hockema (wife Bonnie) of West Lafayette, daughter Beth Pfost (husband Jeff) of Seattle WA and a brother Peter Burkenpas of Lafayette. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Brooke Holliday Wiley (husband, Trell) and Drew Holliday (wife, Liz) both of Playa Del Rey, CA, Robert C. "Bob" Hockema (wife, Amy) of West Lafayette, Jennifer "Jenn" Hockema and William "Will" Hockema both of Chicago and 2 great grandchildren, Charlie and Henry Hockema. She is preceded in death by her sisters Katherine Dykstra, Dorothy Smith and her brother Clarence Burkenpas.

Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Funeral service 10 a.m. Saturday at Lafayette Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Mark Bonnes officiating. Burial to follow at the Grand View Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Lafayette Christian Reformed Church or Lafayette Christian School. Hippensteel Funeral Home is entrusted with care.
