Jaap Lind

Jaap Jan Lind, M.D.

Dr. Jaap Jan Lind passed away from natural causes on January 6 at IU Health Arnett Hospital in Lafayette, IN. He was born January 25, 1922, the fourth son of Arend and Gesina Hessling Lind, in Utrecht, Netherlands.

He graduated from high school in Utrecht, followed by a year of Pharmacy at the University of Utrecht before the German invasion of Holland closed the universities. All students were sent as forced laborers to Germany; he was a Pharmacy Assistant in a hospital in Berlin for the next two years. After the Allies began daily saturation bombing of Berlin, he escaped back to Holland, where he worked with "the Underground" Resistance through the remainder of the occupation. When the universities reopened, he elected to study Medicine, receiving his MD degree in 1950. He travelled to Kansas City, MO in 1951, for a one year internship at Trinity Lutheran Hospital, where Ruth Allen was a Medical Technologist in the Laboratory. They were married at the end of that year in First Methodist Chapel in Wichita, KS. He accepted a residency at the TB Sanatorium in McCain, NC.

In 1953, with daughter Kathy, they sailed to the Netherlands to obtain his immigration papers. Upon returning, he opened a General Practice office in Mulberry, IN in 1954. Three more children were born there in nine years, before moving the family to the Panama Canal Zone for a Residency in Orthopedic

Surgery at Gorgas Hospital. In 1966 he joined the Arnett Clinic, where he had an impact, touching many lives and families.

After he retired in 1986, he and his wife travelled extensively. In 1988 he served with the International Medical Corps in both Pakistan and Somalia. He also volunteered locally as an advocate for children with CASA. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in West Lafayette for the past 40 years.

The Sagamore of the Wabash was awarded to him in 2001, in appreciation for his service to local and global health concerns.

He and his wife moved to Westminster Village in 2004.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ruth Allen Lind, and by children: Kathy Lind, Anchorage, AK, Steven (Denise) Lind, Sugarland, TX, Christine (Don) Wilson, Buckley, WA and Richard (Elaine) Lind, Charlotte, NC. Grandchildren: Carolyn Layne, Jessica and Nicholas Lind, Anna and Morgan Wilson, and Sam Lind.
