Joel Ray Hershman

Joel Ray Hershman, 62, Brook, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, in a shooting at the IHOP in Lafayette. He was born on June 19, 1949, in Rensselaer, to Richard R. Hershman and Margaret Gene (Harris) Hershman-Cox.

He attended South Newton High School in Kentland, graduating in 1968. He also attended Northwood and Indiana Northwest Colleges. He was the owner and operator of Hershman True Value, Brook.

He attended Brook United Methodist Church, was a member of the Brook Chamber of Commerce, former president of the Brook Town Board and formerly of J.C.'s and Brook Lions Club. He enjoyed traveling and visiting with family and friends.

He is survived by a brother, Scott H. (Patricia) Hershman, El Paso, Texas; a special friend, Scott Whaley, Brook; a nephew, Mica Hershman and a niece, Elizabeth Ann (Rachel Hershman-Greven) Hershman. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be at the Brook United Methodist Church, Thursday, Jan. 17, 2013, 4-8 p.m. (CST). Service with be at the Brook United Methodist Church, Friday, Jan. 18, 2013, at 11 a.m. (CST), with Richard E. Gerts officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Brook Community Club. Arrangements by Gerts Funeral Home, Brook.
