Margaret E. Melville

Margaret E. (Hasser) Melville who was also known as "Peg" or "Scrappy", 92, of Lafayette, formerly a longtime resident of Bradenton, Fla., died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2012, at St. Anthony Healthcare Center. Margaret was born May 19, 1920, in Earl Park, the daughter of the late Edward and Katherine Andres Hasser. She graduated in 1938 from Earl Park High School and went on to attend Schreiber's Beauty Academy in 1939. Margaret was the widow of William L. Melville who preceded her in death March 3, 1970. She had lived most of her life in the Greater Lafayette area, living in Bradenton, Florida from 1982 to 2002. For 20 years, she was a hairdresser and then worked as a seamstress in the drapery department for the former Reifer's Department Store in Lafayette. Margaret was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bradenton and St. Boniface Catholic Church in Lafayette. While living in Bradenton, Margaret was a member of the Moose Lodge, the VFW Auxiliary, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed sewing, painting pictures in oils and watercolor, and spending time with her family and friends.

Margaret is survived by her six children, William Melville (wife: Brenda), of Lafayette, Jacquie Beckham (husband: Steve), of Cortez, Fla., David Melville (wife: Mary), of Lafayette, Thomas Melville (wife: Colleen), of West Point, Deborah Arihood (husband: Frank), of Lafayette and Kim Melville, of Lafayette; a sister-in-law, Theresa Hasser, of Fowler; 12 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, George Hasser; a sister, Mary McDaniel; a great-granddaughter, Demi Skees; and a great-grandson, Steven Melville.

A private family memorial visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday with the Mass of Christian Burial at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Lawrence Catholic Church with Father Dan Gartland officiating.
