Mary Jean Peterson, 76

Mary Jean Peterson, 76, of West Lafayette, passed away at her home, surrounded by her family on Friday, July 26, 2013.

Mary Jean was born in Ames, Iowa on August 18, 1936. She was the daughter of the late Doctor John Booth Peterson and Elizabeth Fogel Peterson. She had been a resident of West Lafayette for most of her life. She graduated from West Lafayette High School in 1954, before attending Purdue University.

Mary Jean married Robert Joseph Brown in 1957. During this time they had six daughters together.

Mary Jean worked for many years at Purdue University. She held several different positions while working at Purdue, However she made her biggest contribution while employed with her last position there. She was the Administrative Assistant in the Office of University Relations, a position that had great responsibility and reward. During her time with University Relations she assisted with many projects and issues which were pertinent and public to the University. Mary Jean was always proud of being a part of the Purdue community and continued her family tradition of providing outstanding service to the University. A tradition which had begun many years before by her father, the late Dr John Booth Peterson. She retired from Purdue University in 2001. She enjoyed a quiet life in retirement surrounded by family, taking care of her home, yard and her dogs. She was diagnosed with Cancer in 2012, the illness that would eventually take her life.

Mary Jean enjoyed many things in her life, including her children and spending time with her many grandchildren. She took great pride in taking care of her home and yard, planting flowers and restoring the many antiques that she would salvage and return to their original beauty. She also enjoyed reading, watching old westerns and "shoot em ups" and making stained glass crafts.

Mary Jean leaves behind five daughters, Pam Brown, North Vernon; Barbara Corns, Lafayette; LuAnn Mathes, Holton; Nancy Anker-Wright, West Lafayette and Brenda Brown; West Lafayette. She also leaves behind 12 grandchildren, as well as 3 great-grandchildren.

Mary Jean was preceded in death by a daughter, Julianne Gunther, a grandson, Anthony Joseph Larkins; as well as her brother John Robert Peterson.

Mary Jean will be laid to rest at a private family service, at Grandview Cemetery in West Lafayette, Indiana.
