Randall R. "Randy" Nelson, 62

Randall R. "Randy" Nelson, 62, of West Lafayette, passed away at 11:39 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2013, in his home surrounded by his family. Born June 16, 1950, in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Francis C. and June (Bagby) Nelson. Randy was a 1968 graduate of Montmorenci High School.

His marriage was to Denise (Semear) Harris on August 26, 1989, in Battle Ground, and she survives. Randy was a truck driver for Milestone Construction for 30 years, retiring in 2000. He attended St. Lawrence Catholic Church. He was a past President, board member, and chaired various committees with the Wabash Area Lifetime Association, a member of the Teamster's Local 135 and Moose Lodge 1529, where he was past Governor and chaired various other committees, and a current delegate to the Tippecanoe Building and Trades Council. He and his wife were professional fundraisers and co-chairmen of Shop with The Mayor for the past 9 years. He bowled in the King Men's bowling league at Elston Lanes and participated in the Men's Dart League and went to state competition. Randy volunteered with Camp Bluebird in Lafayette and Indianapolis. He encouraged many of the women campers to continue their cancer treatments. He participated in the Relay for Life Team for the American Cancer Society. He loved NASCAR, traveling to Florida, visiting railroad train museums, and Purdue Basketball.

Surviving with his wife are his two daughters, Fawn Harris, of Lafayette and Jennifer Nelson, of Vincennes; his son, Jay Harris, of Lafayette; two brothers, Gerald Nelson, of West Lafayette and David Nelson, of North Fort Myers, Fla. (fiancé, Donna Daniels); five grandchildren, Malika, Olivia, Leeann, Kaleb, and Miranda; and his uncle and aunt, Ronald and Sonja Wiegand, of rural Lafayette.

Randy's wife, Denise, not only lost her husband, but her best friend. Randy was one who never met a stranger and had a hug for everyone.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hippensteel Funeral Home, with Moose Lodge memorial service at 7 p.m. Funeral service 1 p.m. Friday, with visitation one hour prior to the service, with Father Dan Gartland officiating. Burial to follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens. The family requests memorial contributions be made to Camp Bluebird.
