Robert F. Niewerth, 91

Robert F. Niewerth, 91, of Lafayette, passed away on Monday, December 31, 2012, at Creasy Springs Health Campus in Lafayette.

Born December 18, 1921 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Robert F. Sr. and Anna Mae Weedon Niewerth. He was married May 27, 1951, at the 4th Avenue Methodist Church in Terre Haute, to Evelyn Grace Schaeffer, who preceded him in death.

Robert graduated from Jefferson High School in 1940, before going on to serve in the Navy during World War II. He worked several years as a rural mail carrier for the United States Post Office, retiring in the 1970s.

Robert was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge #492 where he played the organ, Shrine Club and Shrine Band, Eastern Star, York Rite, High 12, N.A.R.F.E., Craft 94, and he played the trombone for a military band. He was an amateur ham radio operator, and enjoyed following Purdue and Jeff basketball and football.

Surviving are two daughters, Cheryl "Cherie" (John E.) Hileman and Debbie Niewerth, both of Lafayette; two grandchildren, Amanda E. Hileman and John R. Hileman; and one great-grandchild, Carson Michael Lowery.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Marjorie Ann Niewerth.

Services will be held at Fisher-Loy Funeral Chapel, Lafayette, Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 1 p.m. with Pastor Paul Arnold officiating.

Interment will follow in Springvale Cemetery, Lafayette.

Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. on Friday, January 4, at Fisher-Loy Funeral Chapel. A Masonic service will be held at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Shrine processional on Friday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity United Methodist Church Endowment Fund or the Shriner's Hospitals for Children in memory of Robert. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
