Robert Nicholas Thoennes, 79

Robert Nicholas (Nick) Thoennes, 79, Wake Forest, N.C. formerly of Lafayette, In. and Holland, Mi. died Oct. 25, 2012, after a courageous 3 year battle with lung cancer.

Nick was born July 23, 1933, in Lafayette, In. to Robert M. and Fern Thoennes. He graduated from Lafayette Jefferson High School in 1951 and Purdue University with a BSME in 1955. He served in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant in Germany with the 775 Artillery Battalion from 1956 to 1958. He was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and Elks.

In August 1958, he married Peggy (Ross) Thoennes, who survives. He joined Federal Mogul Corp. in 1965 and served in many positions ending as a general manager. He retired in 1993.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Beverly J. Pleasants. Besides his wife, he is survived by his three children: Mathew S. Thoennes, West Harrison, N.Y., Connie Skoug (John), Libertyville, Il., and Nikki Brooks (Clayton), Raleigh, N.C.

He is also survived by 5 grandchildren - Evan, Jennica and Eric (Shannon) Skoug, and Andrew and Sarah Brooks; and 9 nieces and nephews.

Also surviving are sisters-in-law Betty Kearney (Jim), Panama City, Fl. and Nancy Elliott, Muncie, In.

Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held in Wake Forest in late November. Internment will take place in Rest Haven Memorial Park, Lafayette, In. in the spring. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wake County, Inc., Wake Forest United Methodist Church (pastor's discretionary fund), The .., The or a .
