William "Bill" Byrne Buckles, 92
William "Bill" Byrne Buckles, 92, of New Richmond, passed away at 2:35 a.m. on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at Franciscan St. Elizabeth East Hospital in Lafayette, surrounded by his family.
He was born June 5, 1920, in South Raub, the son of the late Samuel "Eli" and Nettie Wooldridge Buckles. He grew up in Pine Village, graduating from Pine Village High School in 1939. Bill married Virginia L. Cornell on September 19, 1947, at St. Boniface Church in Lafayette. From a young age, Bill had a love for animals and worked on his family farm until he and Virginia bought their own farm just outside of Wingate. Mr. Buckles was an Honorary Life Member of The Knights of Columbus and also a member of Good Sam's Camping Club. For most of his life, he attended St. Bernard Catholic Church in Crawfordsville, and most recently joined the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette, where his son the Rev. Father David J. Buckles is pastor. Throughout his wholesome life Bill enjoyed farming, camping, playing cards, woodworking, being outdoors, square dancing and most importantly, spending time with family.
Survivors include six daughters, Theresa Bailey, of New Richmond, Judy (Gerry) Adams, of Garner, N.C., Linda (George) Keller, of Lafayette, Irene (Chuck), of Crawfordsville, Marcella Darling, of Garner, N.C., and Anita (Les Tuttle) Risk, of Lafayette; four sons, Sam (Annie) Buckles, of Arecibo, Puerto Rico, the Rev. David Buckles, of West Lafayette, Patrick (Teresa) Buckles, of New Richmond, and Vince (Joyce Kaplan) Buckles, of Garner, N.C.; 25 grandchildren; 49 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several other extended family members and friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia; a daughter, Margaret; a grandson, Geremy; and three brothers, Charles, Clarence "Floyd", and Robert "Bob" Buckles.
Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette; the Rev. Father David Buckles officiating. The burial will take place at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lafayette, immediately following the ceremony. Friends may call from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Saturday, preceding the funeral mass. In addition, there will be a Rosary Service at 5:30 p.m. Friday evening at the church, followed by a viewing until 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Religious Education Program and Youth Ministries at the Church of the Blessed Sacrament.
