William Richard 'Dick' Nesbitt, 93
ROMNEY — William Richard 'Dick' Nesbitt, 93 of rural Romney, died at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday, September 24, 2013, in Witham Memorial Hospital following a short illness. Dick was born in rural Montgomery County February 3, 1920, son of the late Herman B. & Ruth Miller Nesbitt. He married Ruby Watts in Henderson, Kentucky June 25, 1942 and she survives. They were approaching their 72nd wedding anniversary.
Dick was a graduate of New Richmond High School and attended Purdue University
School of Agriculture for two years. He served in U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II, spending a year in Alamogordo, NM and two years in England. He had attained the rank of Tech. Sgt before his honorable discharge and he remained a very patriotic and proud American.
He had farmed in the Romney community until his retirement. He raised grain and livestock and was particulary proud of raising and showing purebred Shorthorn Cattle with his family. Being a man of the land, following retirement he enjoyed gardening and nurturing his flowers. Dick and Ruby spent the past 30 winters in Arizona, where they hiked the mountain trails, sightseeing and enjoying retirement.
Dick was a member of Jackson Heights United Methodist Church and was a 50 year member of the New Richmond United Methodist Church, where he had been active and served as Sunday School Superintendent. He was a supporter of 4-H programs and musical activities at Coal Creek Central School. He was an avid supporter of Purdue athletics and lifelong disappointed Chicago Cubs fan. Dick had enjoyed woodworking and just recently turned his woodworking tools over to his son.
Dick was a family man. He loved, was devoted to and proud of his family. A colorful character, Dick never met a stranger and could talk with ease to anyone about anything . He enjoyed all things political and would never miss an opportunity to explain his view of current events. He was a story teller who could connect stories from his past to current day events .
Survivors, including his wife Ruby, are two daughters: Katherine Marie (James) Decker of Clarksville, TN, Carol Ann (Richard) Nester, Lebanon, IN, a son William Michael (Maxine) Nesbitt of Carmel, IN. Seven grandchildren: Jennifer (Joe) Taylor, Andrew Decker, Tyler (Meghan) Nester, Suzanna (Jeff) Mayhugh, Kacia (Andy) Mills, Abigail (Todd) Geders, Ellen Nesbitt and eight great-grandchildren. Two sisters: Virginia (Greenburg of Franklin, IN and Helen (Carl) Williams of Pittsboro, NC, a brother: John (Wanda) Nesbitt of Owings Mills, MD. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Tom Nesbitt, Three sisters, Martha Steinbicker, Winifred Nesbitt and Doris Jackson.
The family will receive guests 5:00 - 8-00 p.m. Friday, September 27, 2013 at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral service, 1:30 p.m. Saturday, September 28, 2013 at Jackson Heights United Methodist Church with Pastor Chuck Tague officiating. Burial will follow in New Richmond Cemetery, with Graveside rites by American Legion Post 72 and Bowman VFW
