James Alkire Obituary

James F. Alkire

James F. Alkire, 82, of Lafayette, passed away Sunday April 12, 2015 at IU Health Arnett. He was born in Lafayette April 8, 1933 to Mildred and Chester Alkire. On July 23, 1966 he married Sally Raub Alkire in the First United Methodist Church of which he was a member. Jim graduated from Jefferson High School in 1952. His interest in photography began in 1957 with an apprenticeship at Phillip's Studio in Lafayette and in 1964 he opened his own photography studio at 214 North 5th Street. His first year in business he won the Severin Award presented by the Professional Photographers Association of Indiana for the best total exhibit. He was a photography judge for the Indiana State Fair in the years 1983,'85,'86 and '89, both amateur and professional divisions. He also judged the Scholastic Art Exhibition sponsored by L.S. Ayres and the Indianapolis Star, the Purdue Camera Club, the Riviera Camera Club of Indianapolis and the 4-H Fair Photo Contests. In 1989 he won the Kodak/Parade Magazine, "The American Woman" photo contest. Out of 115,000 entries, his photo, along with 99 others, was exhibited on a Kodak-Sponsored nationwide tour. It was later published in a book and used as a lead in on an ABC show. While in high school, Jim played drums in local bands. He played through the 50's with the Ray Gretencord quartet and Chet Bauch 18 piece band. In the 60's he was with Dan McGuire's group. In 1968, he formed the Jim Alkire jazz trio and played many venues around Lafayette. In 1969, he formed his first 5-piece band which later went to a 7-piece group. It was a very popular dance band in Lafayette and the State. He also had the Jim Alkire Dixieland Jazz Band. In 1981, he was the recipient of the Musician of the Year Award presented by the Lafayette Federation of Musicians Local #162. The band was in existence for 43 years. Jim always prided himself on giving back to the community. He and the band volunteered for many events which included The Tippecanoe Historical Association, the Lafayette Citizen's Band, the depot relocation to Riehle Plaza, etc. Jim is survived by his wife of 49 years; sisters Ruth Ann Alkire of West Lafayette, Mary Elizabeth Butler of Lafayette, and Marjorie Carder of Indianapolis. He is also survived by many numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Donald and Francis, and sisters Jane, Carmen and Mary Josephine. Friends may call at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home, 1104 Columbia St., Lafayette from 5 until 7 PM Wednesday. Funeral services will be held at the Hahn-Groeber Funeral Home 11:00 AM Thursday, Fr. Timothy Alkire officiating, with interment to follow at Battle Ground Cemetery. The family requests donations to the Almost Home Animal Shelter in memory of Jim who was a lover of all animals. And let me add a photographer and a musician did.
We are going to miss you, Uncle Jim. You lived a life worth emulating full of love, graciousness, humor, and integrity. You are a hard act to follow, but thank you for the example. With love and utmost respect,

Dear Sally, I have enjoyed knowing both of you for most of my life! Musically, Jim gave me all kinds of opportunities to play with his band for many years! I will never forget the music and the musicians - they were all great people! You, too, were such a great influence on my very early musical career in Junior High! Thanks for giving me that head start at the keyboards! Even though our paths have not crossed for some years, I have often thought about those times! Wishing you peace, your friend, Jae Bolyard Kellogg

Photo Class in 1962

I remember Jim well. When I was in high school, Jim taught a photo class at the South Side Community Center. He was very dedicated to his photo profession. It was really great that he took time out of his daily life to teach photography to about 10-12 young kids wanting to learn about photography. All this happened in 1962. I ran into Jim many, many years later and he remembered the time he spent with us and we talked quite a bit about his teaching us about his passion of photograph. He was a great man and I shall remember him.

I am still in tears at the loss of my friend Jim. During the past year and a half or so, Jim and I met for lunch several times at S&S and Bob Evan's. Each time was a special time talking about music and different musicians and singers we liked locally and many who were famous. All the time I knew I was sharing lunch with a famous musician in his own right. Every local musician and so many from all over knew who Jim Alkire was. He made such an impact on the music scene and so many musicians who knew him well like I did. It was always an honor to sit with him in a restaurant and share stories about our musical adventures from the past. He was a musician who was second to none and I had the honor to have him play as a duo with me several times over the years. He was so polished and professional when he played. I will miss him for many years for the man he was. I am in tears as I write this. Thank you Jim for allowing me to get to know the man you are.

Jim took my first publicity photo back in the 60's. He and I were both drummers playing everywhere in and around Lafayette. I went into the Air Force and never saw him again until 2013. He and I and Larry Gould met for lunch. We had a great time talking over old times. Losing Jim is our loss and GOD's gain.

I am so heart broken over the loss of such a wonderful man. The entire family is like my family as well. My heart goes out to everyone who was lucky enough to know Jim, he is one terrific man. Heaven is lucky to gain such a great soul with his wit, charm, jokes and love for everyone including his animals. I will so miss waiting on him at TC's (I say his favorite restaurant but because I am his favorite waitress I am probably way off but in my mind I am right)I will miss the laughter he brought and how having such a bad day and Jim would walk in smile and joke around would change everyone's outlook. One awesome man! I wish I could have seen Jim before he passed to tell him what a great impact he has had on my life and that will be one of my biggest regrets. My heart goes out to all of his family, Sally I love you and the whole gang so much as well. Life goes on as they say but it will NEVER be as wonderful as it was when Jim was here..I have a feeling God is laughing right now at one of his jokes. Rest in peace my friend....

So sorry for your loss Sally. Jim's presence and influence was felt throughout Lafayette and central Indiana. A good friend and musician, he brought joy and happiness to so many. He is probably already organizing a new celestial band, telling his corny jokes, and interspersing with a lot of "bada bing." RIP
