Herbert Arihood Obituary
Herbert H. Arihood, 73, of Rensselaer passed away Sunday December 16, 2012, at the Jasper County Hospital. Herb was born in Indianapolis on September 19, 1939, to Herbert E. Arihood and Virginia L. (Harden) Arihood Houston.
On April 16, 1961, in Rensselaer Herb married Luanne Newcome who survives.
Herb graduated from Rensselaer High School with the class of 1957. He served in the United States Army from 1959-1962. He later earned his Brokerage and Real Estate license. Herb was the owner and operator of Arihood Tire Market in Rensselaer for 45 years and was a member of the Rensselaer Volunteer Fire Department from 1966-1975.
He was a member of the First Christian Church of Rensselaer where he was past Board Chairman, Elder and Deacon.
Herb served on the Rensselaer Central School Board from 1988-1991 and the Rensselaer City Council from 1992-2000. He was elected as Mayor of Rensselaer and served for three terms in that position from 2000-2012.
He was a member of Prairie Lodge #125 F & AM, Rensselaer Lions Club and a former member of Kwainis. Herb enjoyed racing, golfing, traveling, music and his family, especially his grandchildren.
Surviving is his wife, Luanne Arihood, Rensselaer; one son, Christian (Trissa) Arihood, Rensselaer; two daughters, Angela (Mark) Sleeman, Henderson, Nev., and Paige Arihood, Rensselaer; four grandchildren, Aubrey Arihood, Ashlyn Arihood, Rylan Arihood and Thomas Sleeman; and his aunt, Helen Hetzner, Rensselaer. Herb was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Patricia Kaufman.
Friends will be received by the family Friday, December 21, 2012, from 2 - 8 p.m., at the Jackson Funeral Chapel of Rensselaer. Masonic Lodge services will be conducted at the funeral chapel at 7 p.m. Friday. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 22, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at the First Christian Church of Rensselaer with Rev. Elizabeth Hartmann officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Weston Cemetery, Rensselaer. Memorials may be made to the First Christian Church of Rensselaer or the Jasper County Hospital Home Healthcare and Hospice

We lived in Rensselaer in the '70s and Herb was a very good friend, and a good man. He will be missed.
