Bernard Weinland Obituary
Bernard "Bernie" Theodore Weinland, 93, of West Lafayette, passed away on Sunday, March 6, 2016.
He was born on July 2, 1922 in Bronxville, NY to the late Reverend George F. and Gertrude F. (Grunert) Weinland.
Bernie served in the United States Navy during World War II as a radarman second class. He was stationed with destroyer escort DE 245 on the USS Sloat in the Mediterranean, and later the Pacific.
After the war, he attended Purdue University, where he received his BS in agriculture in 1948. He managed the Purdue/USDA Poultry Research Farm in West Lafayette while earning his Masters in Genetics and PhD in Population Genetics and Statistics from Purdue University in 1966. He continued to work for the USDA as a biometrician at the Agricultural Research Center in Beltsville, Maryland. He retired after more than 31 years with the Department of Agriculture and moved to Sun City Center in Florida. In Sun City Center he volunteered with the ambulance service and was a member of a lawn-bowling team.
His love for his family and Purdue prompted his move to Westminster Village in West Lafayette 3 years ago. He attended St. Andrews Methodist Church in West Lafayette.
Bernie was an avid organic gardener and stamp collector. He enjoyed traveling and the beach, spending many summers camping with his family on Assateague Island at the Maryland shore.
Surviving are his sons, David (Pam) Weinland of Elkhart, IN and Bruce (Jan) Weinland of Maryland; his daughters, Jean (Lance) Rudegeair of Yellow Springs, OH, and Judy (Steve) Farrar of Marstons Mills, MA; and his siblings, Fran VanBuskirk of Newfoundland, PA and Paul Weinland of New Jersey. Also surviving are 9 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren and the mother of his children, Joan Weinland of Kettering, OH.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce Weinland, and his sisters, Beatrice Underwood and Marion Sheetz.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, April 21, 2016 at St. Andrews Methodist Church, 4703 N 50 W West Lafayette with Rev. Chris Danielson officiating.

Uncle Bernie was always kind, positive and soft-spoken - I admired him deeply.
I have fond memories of a camping trip to Assateague Island with him and his daughter Judy while she & i were about junior high school age.
His career using computers in the 1960's - early days of computing - informed my career choice.
We are all grateful to have had him in our family!

I knew him as Uncle Bernie. He was always kind and generous to me and my immediate family. He is deeply respected by many and will be greatly missed. I am comforted knowing he is in heaven now with my mom having lived a long and honorable life. Thoughts and prayers to the rest of the family.

I remember making the rounds at the USDA Poultry Research Farm, collecting eggs with Jean, Bruce and David. Even though we were 'country' kids, we were never around chickens, so it was quite an experience.
Uncle Bernie always had a smile on his face. And on a trip to see Bernie in Florida, we got to enjoy sweet, ruby red grapefruit from the tree in his backyard.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Bernie's family.
