Dr. Julio Cesar Martinez, 48, of West Lafayette, passed away at 6:48 a.m. on Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at IU Health University Hospital in Indianapolis. Born September 11, 1964 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, he was the son of Nilson E. Martinez Howley and Hilda A. Hernandez de Martinez of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Dr. Martinez obtained several professional degrees in different places. He earned his undergraduate degree of Ingeniero Civil from Universidad Católica Madre y Maestra in Santiago, Dominican Republic (1981-1986); his M.S. in Civil Engineering from University of Nebraska, Lincoln, NE (1986-1987); his M.S.E. in Construction Engineering and Management from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI (1991-1993); and his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering (Construction Engineering and Management) from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI (1992-1996). He was a registered Professional Engineer in Dominican Republic. From 1988-1991 he was Partner at De Leon, Valencia y Martinez (Contractors) in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. From 1992-1996 he worked as a Claims Analyst, Research & Development Engineer, and Associate at Project Management Associates, Inc. in Ann Arbor, MI. In 1996, he worked as an Adjunct Assistant Professor and Research Fellow at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI. Following the completion of his Ph.D. in 1996, he became Assistant Professor (1996-2002) and later Associate Professor (2002-2006) of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University in Blacksburg, VA. In 2007, Dr. Martinez moved with his family to West Lafayette, IN to work as an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Purdue University, and in 2012 he was promoted to Professor of Civil Engineering.
On December 21, 2006 in Maracaibo, Venezuela, he married Lena Maria Karjala (now Lena Maria Martinez) and she survives him. He was a member of The Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette, IN. Other memberships and professional affiliations of importance: ASCE-Construction Institute, Member of the Board of Governors, Governor for Research and Education (2009-2011); ASCE Technical Region, Member of Board of Governors, Construction Institute Representative (2009-2011); ASCE, Walter Huber Research Prize Selection Committee Member (2009-2011); ASCE Construction Research Council Executive Committee Immediate Past Chair (2009); Automation in Construction (Elsevier Journal), Editorial Board Member (2007-2010); International Group for Lean Construction, Advisory Board Member (2003 - Present); Director of "Revista Ingenieria Civil y Ambiental" in Chile (2011 - present).
Surviving with his wife and parents are his four children, Nilson Eduardo Martinez-Lopez of West Lafayette, Laura Patricia Martinez-Lopez, Cesar Nicolas Martinez, and Victoria Sofia Martinez all at home; a sister Sandra P. Martinez Hernandez of Santo Domingo, and a brother José Luis Martinez and his wife, Ruth Garcia, and their son, Julian Andres Martinez of New York, NY; his wife's parents, Arnold LeRoy Karjala of Maracaibo, Venezuela and Zoraida Chacin de Karjala of Lafayette, IN.
Visitation 5-8 p.m. Friday, June 7, 2013 at Hippensteel Funeral Home with Rosary at 4:45 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 8, 2013 at The Church of the Blessed Sacrament in West Lafayette with Father David Buckles officiating.
