Calvin Batts, 88

Calvin Batts, 88, of Lafayette, died at 12:54 a.m. Sunday, July 29, 2012, in his residence. Born on July 25, 1924 in Oboin County, Tenn., he was the son of the late Bloomer Batts and Della Murphy Batts. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII aboard the USS Dobbin and USS Providence.

Calvin married Willie Mae Horn on October 23, 1948 in Mayfield, Ky. and she survives.

He was employed for 28 years with Lafayette Roofing & Sheet Metal and retired on August 1, 1986. He was a member of Elmwood Church of Christ. Calvin formerly bowled in a league. He enjoyed woodworking and the outdoors, especially searching with his metal detector, and fishing.

Surviving with his wife are his children, Dan (companion: Doris Bruton) Batts, of Lafayette, Marshall (partner: Hiroko Nakagawa) Batts, of Indianapolis, Belinda (husband: Taber) VanSlyke, of Lafayette and Brenda (husband, Chris) Strantz.

Also surviving are three grandchildren, Amy Bennett, Sean Strantz and Travis Bennett; two step-grandchildren, Sherri (husband, Michael) Mayhill and Jeff Strantz; and three great-grandchildren.
