Charles E. "Charlie" Burkhead, 86, of Lafayette, passed away at Creasy Springs Health Campus, on Monday, September 2, 2013 at 4:00 p.m. Born April 26, 1927 in Boswell, IN, he was the son of the late Edwin Moses and Ada May (Campbell) Burkhead. He was awarded his high school diploma from Lafayette Jefferson High School at the age of 78 due to leaving Lafayette before his high school graduation and enlisting in the U.S. Air Force during WWII. Charlie honorably served in the U.S. Air Force, the Air Force Reserves, and with the 150th field artillery Indiana National Guard unit.
Charlie's first marriage was to Anna May Loman, the mother of his five children. His second marriage was to Marilyn "Pat" Miller on November 5, 1978 in Lafayette and she preceded him in death in 2002. Charlie operated the former Charlie's Drive-In Restaurant on Schuyler Avenue for 10 years, after that he worked at the former Brown Rubber for 5 years, was an airline mechanic for Purdue Airlines for 10 years, and then worked as a mechanic for the packaging machines at the former General Foods for over 18 years before retiring. He was a member of Evergreen Wesleyan Church, American Legion Post #11, a lifetime and 50 year member of the Eagles Lodge, where he was a former trustee, a charter member of Young American Warworkers' since the age of 16, Sea Scouts Ship #82 in Honolulu, and a member and former board member of the Tippecanoe County Historical Society.
Surviving are his two sons, Paul E. Burkhead of Weston, WV and Daniel D. Burkhead of McMillan, TX; two daughters, Becky M. Snyder of West Lafayette and Katherine D. Swertel, husband John, of Santa Claus, IN; 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles E. "Charlie" Burkhead, Jr., two wives,, six sisters, and one brother.
Visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday with Eagles Memorial Service at 7:00 p.m. at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Funeral service 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Joseph Park officiating.
