D. Bruce Cunningham, 89

BATTLE GROUND — Bruce Cunningham, 89, died at noon Friday, March 1, 2013, in his home surrounded by his family.

Born May 17, 1923, he was the son of the late Rudolph S. and Alma Clara (Shaw) Cunningham.

Bruce spent his entire life in Battle Ground, graduating from Battle Ground High School in 1942. He went on to serve in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne during WW II.

Bruce married Barbara J. Cadwallader on May 23, 1947, in the Battle Ground United Methodist Church; she survives. For 31 years, Bruce worked at the Ross Gear Division of TRW in Lafayette, retiring as an inspector in 1978.

Bruce was an active member of the Battle Ground Bible Church where he was involved in various church activities and a member of the American Legion Post 492.

He enjoyed playing and listening to many types of music including country, gospel and bluegrass. Bruce was an accomplished musician playing the banjo, mandolin, guitar and harmonica. He also was a master cabinet builder and, with that, built and repaired musical instruments for over 50 years. Bruce enjoyed working in his music shop with his son, Gary.

Bruce was a volunteer with the annual Fiddler's Gathering in Battle Ground and was always participating and playing music with various musicians. Bruce also enjoyed fishing but more importantly, spending time and helping his family and friends.

Surviving with his wife, Barbara, are two sons; Roger Cunningham and his wife, Gloria, of Santiago, Chile, and Gary Cunningham and his wife, Sheri, of Delphi; one sister, Edna Pettit and her husband, Lyle; and two brothers, George Cunningham and his wife, Pat, of Lafayette, and Paul Cunningham and his wife, Wanda, of Upland.

Bruce is also survived by his five grandchildren, Brandon (wife, Shawna) Cunningham, Keaton and Isaac Cunningham, Dale Bruce (wife, Renee) Cunningham and Barbie (husband, Joel) Marten; and two great-granddaughters, Mairi and Avery Cunningham.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, John, Duane, and Jim Cunningham; a sister, Mariam Moss; and one infant grandson.

Visitation 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Services 10 a.m. Tuesday in Hippensteel Chapel with his son, Pastor Roger Cunningham, officiating. Burial with military honors at Battle Ground Cemetery.
