David Allen "Bake" Baker, 65, of Lafayette, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at IU Health Arnett Hospital. Born December 3, 1947 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Emmitt and Helen (Abbott) Baker. He was a 1966 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School. David honorably served in the US Marine Corp from 1967 to 1970, where he earned a Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Viet Nam Service Medal with one star, Viet Nam Campaign Medal with Device, Combat Action Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal.
His marriage was to Susan Egelhoff on August 11, 1979 in Lafayette and she survives. David was a steel fabricator for Indiana Steel for 34 years, retiring in 2011. He was a member of American Legion Post #11 and VFW #1154. He was an avid golfer, Purdue sports fan, and Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed fishing.
Surviving with his wife are his siblings, Mary McCutcheon of Yucca Valley, CA, Joan Emrich (husband, Kelly) of West Lafayette, Jack Baker of Lafayette, Joyce Burke of Richmond, VA, and Jerry Baker (wife, Henrietta) of Ware Shoals, SC; a sister-in-law, Connie Baker of Battle Ground; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved dog, Miss Molly. He was preceded in death by siblings, Betty Garrett, Bob, Bill, Lynn, and Max Baker.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Sunday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Funeral service 1 p.m., Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Justin Nierer officiating. Entombment to follow at Tippecanoe Memory Gardens with Military Honors by American Legion Post #11. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.
