David L. Ziegler, 87

David L. Ziegler age 87 from rural Veedersburg/Mellott died 4:20 p.m. Thursday, April 25, 2013 following a lengthy illness in Franciscan St. Elizabeth Central Hospital, Lafayette. Dave was born in rural Fountain County son of the late Charles A. and Minnie Christina Gunnerson Ziegler. He married Martha C. Ratcliff in the Newtown Methodist Church Parsonage, December 17, 1947, she survives. Dave graduated with the final class of Mellott High School.

Dave was a lifelong farmer in the Mellott area. He served Fountain County with dignity and respect as a County Commissioner for 16 years. He unselfishly gave of his time always putting the needs of Fountain County first. He was a member of the Mellott Community Church. He formerly served as county chairman of the Fountain County Farm Bureau, belonged to the Danville/Vermilion County SPEBSQSA and was active in barbershop quartet singing. His quartet was known as the 'Plowboys'. He enjoyed riding his Honda Goldwing, which he recently converted into a 'three wheeler.

Dave's life could be summed up with the words, honor, fairness and integrity. He not only believed in the Golden Rule, but lived by it. All who knew him, enjoyed his humor, infectious smile, quick wit and how he could put you at ease.

Surviving along with his wife Martha are: A daughter Ruth Ann (Olin) Hood of Hiawassee, GA, a son Dwight Ziegler of Veedersburg, a brother, Raymond Ziegler of Iowa. Five grandchildren: Stephanie Gurnon, David Bryant, John Bryant, Chet Ziegler and Eric Ziegler, five Great-grandchildren and many nieces/nephews also survive.

Friends may call at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate, 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2013. Funeral services, 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2013 with Pastor Rich Carty officiating.
