Della May McCauley, 108, Sharpsville, passed away peacefully at 4:25 a.m. Monday, November 11, 2013 at Century Villa Health Care, Greentown. Della was born in Watseka, Illinois on December 13, 1904, the daughter of Charles Allen and Malvena Catherine (Rakestraw) McKee. She had four brothers, Ivan, Ervin, Donald and Russell.
When Della was 15 years old she started working at the Soldiers Home in Lafayette and worked there for five years. She married Sherman Harry Nelson on January 21, 1923. She worked at Purdue University's Cary Hall from the fall of 1939-1941 and at Duncan Electric in Lafayette for 27 years. After she and her husband retired, they moved to Florida. Sherman passed away January 29, 1985. She was a member of Hope Chapter #5, O.E.S., Lafayette, Indiana.
On June 28, 1986, Della and Glen R. McCauley were married. They were members of the First United Methodist Church in Ft. Myers, Florida and moved their membership to First United Methodist Church in Greentown when they moved to Century Fields Retirement Community in April 2001. Glen passed away September 4, 2001.
Della is survived by her step-daughter, Phyllis Salsbery and husband Robert of Sharpsville; step-grandchildren, Beverlee Robinson of Honolulu, Hawaii, Greg (Janet) McCauley of Westfield, Cynthia (George) Sheppard of Auburndale, Florida, Tim (Darlene) Salsbery, Randy (Anne) Salsbery, Pat (Rhonda) Salsbery and Becky Salsbery, all of Sharpsville; many step-great-grandchildren; step- great-great-grandchildren; and several generations of nephews and nieces. The family would like to thank Century Villa and Dr. Westrom for the care and compassion shown to Della in the past few years.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, November 14, 2013 at Shirley & Stout Funeral Home & Crematory, Lincoln Road Chapel, 1315 West Lincoln Road, with Pastor Jeff Harlow officiating. Burial will follow in Albright Cemetery. The family will receive friends from noon until service time on Thursday. Messages of condolence may be left online at www.shirleyandstout.com.
