Donald "Guy" Bassett, Jr.

Donald Bassett, Jr. "Guy", 60, left this earth on April 24, 2014 at 4:35 pm in the VA Hospital, Des Moines, IA. He was born August 15, 1953 in Moline, IL to the late Donald and Ida Mae Bassett. The family moved to Monticello, IN when he was a year old. He attended Monticello schools, Twin Lakes High School, and graduated from Roosevelt Military Academy in Aledo, IL. He joined the Air Force, spending time in England, which he found very enjoyable. Guy's compassion was cooking. He was the cook at several high end restaurants, having the dream to operate his own restaurant. Guy moved to Colorado with the hopes of attaining that goal, but when it didn't work out, he went to Council Bluffs, IA as a welder for some time before spending time in IL and then moving back to Lafayette. He worked for some time at SIA, was a friend to everyone he met, would do anything to help any way he could. He loved gardening also. He always had large gardens, and planted a vegetable at the VA home which he was responsible for in their planter boxes. Guy was a very strong 'principal' minded person, got him into many troubles, but he stood by those principals. He was also a very compassionate person, loving his children to the ultimate. As his health declined, he was living in a VA Home in Marshalltown, IA. He would visit the other residents, talk with them, give them little "snacks", and make sure if they had problems, try to help solve them. He is dearly missed.

His father predeceased him in 1988 and his brother Herbert in 1987. Surviving are his four children, Chris of TN, Chandler of RI, Corey and Collier of Frankfort, IN; a grandson, Jaxson; sisters, Donna Rundell (John) of CO and Joan Campbell of Lafayette; aunts, Jeanie McCormick of CA and Sherry Whitmore of IL; and many nephews, nieces and cousins. He was so very happy and proud when Jaxson came along.

A Memorial Service will be held August 1st at 7:00 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Chapel (914 Columbia, Lafayette) with visitation 1 ½ hours prior to the service. There will be refreshments and visiting afterwards. He will be laid to rest August, 2, 2014 in Fairview Cemetery in Tonica, IL.
