Helen Marie Smith, 87

Helen Marie Smith, 87, of Kendallville, died Monday, Feb. 18, 2013, at Lutheran Life Villages in Kendallville.

Mrs. Smith was born in Helmer, Ind., on July 28, 1925, to the late George L. and Dorothy H. (Lower) Strouse.

She graduated from Hamilton High School in 1941 and married Howard A. Smith on Aug. 24, 1942. He preceded her in death on May 29, 1993.

Helen worked in medical records at McCray Hospital in Kendallville for 6 years. She also worked at the Medical Arts Clinic in Kendallville for Dr. Bryan and Dr. Hepner for many years. She was a member of South Milford Church of Christ and enjoyed reading, traveling, church gatherings, and spending time with her friends, family and grandchildren.

Surviving are three children: Roxanna Stouder (husband: Michael) of Lafayette; Michael Smith (wife: Cindy) of Kendallville; and Deborah Bruce (husband: Michael) of Kendallville. A daughter, Myra Russell (husband: John), preceded her in death in 2003.

Also surviving are ten grandchildren: Jeffrey Stouder (wife: Kim) of Lafayette; Jennifer Christos of Lafayette; Alex Bruce (wife: Erin) of Bloomington; A.J. Bruce of Fort Wayne; Chris Smith (wife: Mandi) of Kendallville; Corey Smith (wife: Kelly) of Kendallville; Nanette Russell of Kendallville; Natalie Bontrager (husband: Bruce) of Wolcottville; Robert Russell of Wolcottville; and Herman Lehman (wife: Sue) of Kendallville.

Other family includes 17 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and sisters Margo Taylor of McClish Lake near Hudson, Nancy Gunter, and Kathy Alexander. A sister, Betty Bry, preceded her in death.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 21, 2013, at Hite Funeral Home in Kendallville.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 22, 2013, at South Milford Church of Christ with visitation an hour prior. Pastor Brian Walter will conduct the service. Casketbearers will be her grandsons. Burial will be at Lake View Cemetery in Kendallville. Memorials may be made to South Milford Church of Christ.
