Homer D. "Hop" Halsema, 68, of Lafayette, passed away at 5:41 p.m. on Saturday, November 10, 2012, at St. Elizabeth East Hospital. Born May 25, 1944, in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Homer C. and Gladys (Neal) Halsema. Hop graduated from Central Catholic High School 1962, where he excelled in Basket Ball.
Hop married Patricia M. Lemm on September 22, 1962, in Lafayette at St. Boniface Catholic Church. Hop retired after 20 years as a Lafayette Fireman. In retirement with his wife and son owned and operated Hop's Shawnee Tavern for the past 33 years. He enjoyed going to the lake house, boating, fishing, cooking, betting the ponies and was a master storyteller. Hop was well known for his Wednesday night Steak Night and his annual Christmas Wild Game Feed, which benefited families in need.
Surviving with his wife are a daughter, Cindy (Greg) Klumpe, of West Lafayette; two sons, James "Bo" (Tammy) Halsema, of Lafayette and Jeffrey (Tim Holzer) Halsema, of Indianapolis; two sisters, Carolyn Pruitt and Peggy Alsop, both of Lafayette; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by an infant son, Timmy; a brother, Lonnie Halsema; and a sister, Vallie Welborn.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Funeral service at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Hippensteel; Father Tim Alkire officiating. Contributions may be made to the Zeb and Isaiah Halsema college fund or to Reeces Rainbows to benefit the international adoption of his fourth great grandchild. Donations can be made out to Hop's fund in care of Regions Bank (Union St. branch).
