Jay E. "Jay Bird" Summers Jr., 53, of Lafayette died at 12:37 p.m. Friday, July 19, 2013 in the emergency room at St. Elizabeth East Hospital from injuries sustained from an accident earlier in the day. Jay was born December 9, 1959 in Seattle, WA. He was a 1978 graduate of McCutcheon High School and went on to serve and be honorably discharged from the United States Army. Jay married Dawn McCurry on June 15, 1996 in Dayton, IN and she survives. He had worked the last 2 years as a Union Carpenter for Fairfield Contractors and previously worked for various contractors in the Lafayette area including Mid States. Prior to becoming a union carpenter, Jay had drove big rig semis both over the road and locally. He was a member of the Carpenters Union Local # 215. Jay was one who could build just about anything and was very meticulous with designing projects and finish carpentry. He enjoyed storytelling, hunting, fishing, 4 wheeling especially with his brother-in-law Larry, was a Jeff Gordon NASCAR fan, loved airplanes and going to air shows, was a fan of the New Orleans Saints and Purdue University Sports, enjoyed gardening, and he loved his country, spending time with friends and his family, and PBR. Surviving with his wife, Dawn, are his parents, Jay E. and Carol Summers Sr. of Shadeland, a daughter, Dakota at home, 3 sons, Brandon Summers of West Lafayette, Sam Blackwell (companion, Danielle Zuehlke) of Lafayette, and Joshy Blackwell (fiancé Marisa Roach) of Lafayette, five sisters, Linda Pruitt (husband, Jimmy) of Lafayette, Barb Patterson (companion, Calvin) of Virginia, Laura Nelson (husband, Glen) of Battle Ground, Angie Kerkhoff (husband, Jerry) of Thorntown, Linda Lewis (companion, David) of Seattle WA, one brother Jim Summers of Lafayette. Jay is also survived by two grandchildren, Colton and Autumn Blackwell, two brothers-in-law, John McCurry of Dayton and Brad McCurry of Lafayette, two sisters-in-law Brenda McCurry (husband, Larry Whitus) of Lafayette, and Cheryl Price of Dayton. Jay was preceded in death by a brother, Victor Summers and a brother-in-law, Dwight McCurry.
