Joseph "Joe" Garrett, 59

SOUTH BEND -- Joseph "Joe" Garrett, 59, passed away in his home, Saturday, after a courageous 10 month battle with pancreatic cancer.

Born May 2, 1954, he was the son of C. Raymond and Bertha (Brittingham) Garrett. He was preceded in death by his father, Ray. His mother survives in South Bend.

On May 20, 1978, Joe married Elaine (Penner) Garrett. She survives. Also, left to cherish his memory are their children: Natalie Garrett of Miami, Florida, Joey Garrett of New York City, and Matt Garrett of Indianapolis. Also surviving are: brothers: Paul (Carol Brunzell) Garrett of Inver Grove Heights, MN, David (Junko Ueno) Garrett of Tujunga, CA and a sister, Karen (Pete Garfinkel) Garrett of Manhattan, KS as well as numerous cousins, nephews and in-laws.

Joe attended Elmhurst High School and graduated from Wayne High School in Fort Wayne, IN in 1972. He graduated from Purdue University, West Lafayette, with a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management in 1976.

Joe went to work for City Securities Corporation as an Investment Advisor with his beloved mentor, Richard E. Greulich, where Joe worked for 37 years and became Vice-President. Joe had hoped to work for many more years, having recently attained his Certified Financial Planner designation.

Joe was a member of the South Bend Rotary Club for 36 years, having served as a board member. He was also a board member of the Scholarship Foundation of St. Joseph County for 26 years, serving two terms as President.

Joe loved his sports: tennis, softball, basketball, fishing, golf, and the long-term friendships that came from those. He particularly enjoyed his tennis league and won a few city doubles tiles with his good friend Dave George. He also had a love for music, having played tenor saxophone and he appreciated nature. Joe volunteered many hours for youth sports. He helped coach ICCL basketball at St. Jude's School, baseball at South East Little League, and tennis at Marian High School for many years. Joe deeply loved his family and he will be with them always.

The family would like to thank Dr. Rafat Ansari and Brandee Flagg, as well as the chemotherapy suite nurses, for their kindness and care over these past 10 months.

Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4-8pm at the McGann Hay, Granger Chapel, 13260 SR23, enter off Cherry Rd. The Holy Rosary will be prayed at the funeral home in the afternoon at a time TBA. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Matthew Cathedral on Thursday at 10:30am, Msgr. Michael Heintz, Pastor and Rector, officiating. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery.
