Mary S. McDowell, 91, of West Lafayette, died Saturday, June 23, 2012, at University Place.
She was born September 6, 1920, in Salem, Ind., to the late Fred and Grace Baynes Simpson.
Mary graduated from Purdue University in 1942 with a BS in Home Economics and Institutional Management. On September 6, 1947, she married Richard McDowell in Salem and he preceded her in death on April 2, 2009. Through their participation together in the Purdue Faculty Fellow Program for 32 years, Mary and Dick mentored, coached and opened their home to hundreds of Purdue students. They also were long-time supporters of Purdue Musical Organizations. Their kindness and hospitality were extended to family members and friends throughout their 62 years together.
Mary was Assistant Foods Manager at Purdue Cary Hall from 1942 to 1948. She was then Director of Cafeterias for Lafayette Schools for more than 20 years, retiring in 1972. Mrs. McDowell was a member of Federated Church, Altrusa Club and a 55-year charter member of Gamma Mu chapter of Psi Iota Xi philanthropic sorority. Surviving are her two daughters, Sarah (husband: Roy) Johnson, of West Lafayette, Rebecca (husband: Philip) Marshall, of Salem; grandchildren, Marah and Nathanael Marshall, both of Chicago.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Soller-Baker West Lafayette Chapel, 1184 Sagamore Parkway West. Funeral Service 11:00 a.m. Thursday at Federated Church; the Rev. Jon Carlstrom officiating. Entombment will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday at Crown Hill Cemetery in Salem.
