Penelope S. (Penny) Sims, 72

Penelope S. (Penny) Sims, 72, of Monticello, died at 4:53 p.m. on December 1, 2012, peacefully at her home.

She was born February 5, 1940, in Women's Hospital in New York City to the late Sam and Eloise (Coffing) Purnell.

Her marriage was to Charles Sims in 1967 in Wilmette, Ill. He survives.

Penny's grandfather, Fred Purnell was an Indiana United States Congressman. As a young girl, Penny was raised in LaPorte, Indiana, later moving to Chicago, Illinois. In the 1940's, they moved to Evanston, Illinois, where Penny attended grade school. She attended Evanston Township High School. Penny graduated from Wayland Academy in Wisconsin. She lived in Attica, Indiana, for a number of years, and was married to John Roemer, later they divorced, and she moved to Evanston, Illinois, with her family. Penny was active in Tri-Kappa functions and other organizations. In 1967, she married Charles Sims, and they moved to Wilmette, Illinois, where they lived for nearly thirty-five (35) years. Penny was always active in the organizations she belonged to, such as the Northfield Community Church, the Circle Lake Club of Wilmette, Illinios, and the Wimette-Kenilworth Club. She enjoyed the organizations and craft endeavors of these organizations for several years. In 1986, Penny and her husband, Charles, owned and managed the Hawaiian Shop in Evanston, Illinois, it was a small retail business, specializing in resort wear. After selling this business, she became a wedding consultant for Edward Fox Wedding Photographers. In 2001, they purchased their home on Lake Freeman in Monticello, Indiana. As long as health permitted, she became active in the Monticello Christian Church, the Wednesday Reading Club, and Bridge-A-Rama, all of Monticello, Indiana. Penny had a gusto for every endeavor she took, but most of all, she loved her family. A very special Thank You to the Serenity Hospice of Lafayette, Indiana, the family appreciates all and everything they did.

Surviving along with her husband is her children, Rick Roemer, Tim Roemer, James Sims, Charles M. (wife: Lisa) Sims and Julia E. Brady; grandchildren, Lisa Roemer, Lyndsay Roemer, Lauren Roemer, Megan (husband: Derek) Howard, Katie Roemer and Chris (wife: Kristine) Brady; great-grandchildren, Hayden Roemer, Allie Roemer, Colt Brady and Kennedy Brady; sister-in-laws, Elaine Purnell and Susan Rogers;

Preceded in Death are parents and brother, Jim Purnell.

Funeral scheduled for 1 p.m. December 5, 2012, Celebration of Life Service at the Monticello Christian Church; the Rev. Chris Dodson officiating.

Burial will take place at 4 p.m., Graveside Service, December 5, 2012, at the Riverside Cemetery in Attica, Ind. one mile East of Attica on Perry Street.

Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. December 5, 2012, at the Monticello Christian Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be given to either the Monticello Christian Church, Northfield Community Church of Northfield, Ill., or the Bethel Community Church of Attica.
