Robert Edward Priest, 87

Robert Edward Priest, age 87 of Lafayette, passed away at 10:25 p.m. on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Mulberry Health and Retirement. Born September 16, 1924 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Edward L. and Florence G. Graham Priest.

Robert served for three years in the Army during WW II in the South Pacific with the 726th Army Amphibian Tractor Batallion on Pelalui, Okinawa, and Saipan. He was honorably discharged in 1946. He was a member of the American Legion Post 11.

He graduated from Purdue University in 1948 with BS and MS degrees. He also attended Indiana State University and the University of Chicago. Mr. Priest was a teacher and principal at Oakland Elementary School from 1948 to 1987, where he also coached boys' basketball..

For 45 years he was a professional working musician and private music teacher. He was a member, conductor, and business manager of the Lafayette Citizen's Band and president, vice president, and board member of the American Federation of Musicians, local #162. For 30 years he served as professional adjudicator for the Indiana State School Music Association. He was a long-time CB radio operator. An avid motorcyclist, he was the founder and member of Chapter K of the Gold Wing Road Rider's Association. He had been the Amtrack's Lafayette representative and volunteer station attendant for the Lafayette Amtrack passenger station since 1987.

On August 28, 1948 he married Lucille H. Schafer in Lafayette. She preceded him in death on January 31, 1976. Surviving are their children, a son, Russell L. Priest of Lake Ann, MI, and daughters, Geraldine A. Priest of Lafayette and Janet L. Priest (husband, Greg Ludlow) of Mulberry; two brothers, Richard A. Priest (wife, Mary) of Delphi and Roger Priest (wife, Ellen) of Lafayette. Three grandchildren, Christopher Avery (wife, Deb) of Georgia, Scott Avery of Michigan, and Kayla Priest of Michigan, and six great grandchildren, Megan, Christopher, Andrie Marie, Lezlie, Christina, and Dylan also survive.

Visitation from 5-8 p.m. Friday at Hippensteel Funeral Home. Funeral service 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Roger D. Priest officiating. Burial with military honors to follow at St. Boniface Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the . Hippensteel Funeral Home entrusted with care.
