Robert Joseph Van Voorst, 77

DELPHI — Robert Joseph Van Voorst, 77, died Monday, June 4, 2012, in Monticello, after a year long battle with lung cancer.

Robert (Bob) was born November 20, 1934, in Lafayette, to the late Robert E and Stella M. (Cisan) Van Voorst. He attended High School in Chalmers.

Robert served as a Machinist Mate 3rd Class (MM3) for the US Navy, on the USS Paricutin AE-18, during the Korean War from November 4, 1952, through November 1, 1955.

Robert belonged to the American Legion,Post 0268; Fraternal order of Eagles Post 2570; AMVETS Post IN/91; Veterans of Foreign Wars, 40/8, Voiture 211; and Redman's Lodge.

Bob retired from Alcoa with more than 35 years of service.

Surviving are his two sisters, Nona Decker, Alice Harrison; brother Roger VanVoorst (wife: Gladys); two sons, Robert J. Van Voorst II (wife: Leanna) and T. Lee Van Voorst (wife: Angela); two daughters, Brenda H. Sheets (husband: William) and Mary Ann Smerdel (husband: Mark); three grandchildren, Kelsey VanVoorst, Matthew S. Smerdel and Christopher J. Smerdel; and three step grandchildren, Sean Cody, Connor Stumm and Elizabeth Klein.

His brother-in-law, Walter Decker, and granddaughter, Cassandra S. Van Voorst, preceded him in death.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Robert's life from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 12, 2012, at Crossroads Christian Church, 6435 SR 43 N, West Lafayette, IN 47906. A memorial service will follow at 7 p.m. There will be no graveside burial as Robert has selflessly donated his body to Anatomy Sharing Network, an organization that trains doctors, researchers and educators in the advancement of medical science.
