Wilma "Joan" Sweat, 78, of Fairmount, died Monday, December 31, 2012, at Marion General Hospital in Marion.
Born April 14, 1934 in Attica, to the late Asa Shoaf and the late Leota (Reynolds) Shoaf. She was raised in Greenhill, the youngest of 6 children. She married Jim Sweat on December 22, 1956. They celebrated 56 years of marriage. Jim survives in Fairmount.
In the fifties, she played accordion and sang with the "Lonesome Valley Cowboys" of radio station WASK in Lafayette. Later, with "The For You Group" she participated in benefits in every state run facility in Indiana. In 1976, she became an Activity Director for Golden Rule Nursing Home, and continued in that field until 1992. Becoming President of the Indiana Activity Directors Association in 1982. From 1992 to 2001, she worked as a private duty caregiver for several area seniors.
She is also survived by: five sons, Gregory (Mary Ann) Sweat, Marion, Jeff (Tracy) Sweat, Fowlerton, Jim Sweat Jr., Fowlerton, Daryl (Kerri) Sweat, Cincinnati, Bradley Sweat, Matthews. A sister: Fern Bakner, Lafayette; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She as preceded in death by 2 sisters, Ellen McEllhaney and Faye Remster and 2 brothers, Aden and Bill Shoaf
Arrangements are being handled by Armes-Hunt Funeral Home, 415 S. Main St., Fairmount, where the family will receive friends from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, January 4, 2013. Funeral service will be at Armes-Hunt Funeral Home at 10 a.m., Saturday, January 5, 2013, Pastor Ella Nichols officiating. Burial will be at Park Cemetery; Fairmount.
