George Wesley Haniford

George was raised in Goodland, IN; graduated from Goodland High School in 1937; attended Anderson College for one year; transferred to Purdue University in 1938 where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1941; his Masters from Purdue in 1947 and his doctorate degree from Indiana University in 1962.
He married Frances Wallace on June 8, 1941. She survives.
Following his graduation from Purdue in 1941 he served two years as the Recreational Director for the Indiana Soldiers and Sailors Children's Home in Knightstown, IN. He returned to Purdue in 1943 as Assistant Intramural Director. In 1948, he was named Manager of the Recreational Gymnasium and later served as the Director of the Division of Recreational Sports. Prior to his retirement, the Purdue Board of Trustees on November 11, 1983 awarded Dr. Haniford the rank of Director Emeritus of the Division of Recreational Sports.
Dr. Haniford was a Past President of the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association and in 1963 was awarded the Association's first Honor Award. He was the recipient of the first Outstanding Alumni Award presented by Indiana University's Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation Sports Alumni Council. He also held offices in the American Association of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and the College Physical Education Association.
Dr. Haniford was a member of the Elks, Masonic Lodge and Sigma Pi Fraternity.
Along with his wife, Frances, he is survived by two sons, Roger (Connie, his wife) in Winamac, Indiana and David in Indianapolis, Indiana and five granddaughters: Kimberly Schramm (Chris) in Winamac, IN; Andrea Keller (Todd) in Monterey, IN; Laura Seidel (Adam) in Albuquerque, NM; Emily Bowman (John) in West Lafayette, IN; Sarah Haniford in Chicago, IL; and seven great grand children.
A memorial service will be held.
