Fred Colbert, 78, Monticello, formerly of Veedersburg, passed away at 3:57 pm, Monday, June 9, 2014 at Monticello Healthcare.
He was born on February 6, 1936 in Alford, IN to the late Fred D. and Naomi (Scudder) Colbert. Fred served in the United States Army from 1958 to 1964 as a mechanic and obtained the rank of Sergeant First Class.
His marriage of 60 years was to Rachel Lighty in 1954 and she survives.
Fountain County was where he called Home for most of his life. Fred was a carpenter and mechanic for all of his life, specializing in transmissions.
He enjoyed playing the guitar, fishing, playing Bingo, riding his "Gold Wing", and time spent with his "Breakfast Club" at the Apple Tree in Veedersburg.
Surviving with his wife, Rachel, are his eight children, Dan R. Colbert of Florida, Brenda Sanders (husband: Joe) of Kingman, Sharon Shomaker (husband: Alan) of Chalmers, Fred E. Colbert (wife: Sharon of Crawfordsville, Rachel M. West of Lafayette, David M. Colbert (wife: Marla) of Veedersburg, Rita Jordan (husband: Troy) of Veedersburg, and Martha Rodriguez (husband: Anthony) of Monticello .
He is also survived by 33 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren.
Preceding him in death with his parents are one brother, Ralph Colbert; three sisters, Jane Ingram, Joan Barnes, and June Cissell, and one grandson, Scotty Joe Sanders.
Friends may call from 4pm until the time of Funeral Service at 7 pm, Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Hartzler-Clapper Funeral Home of Brookston with Pastor Jewell Gilley officiating.
Memorials may be made in Fred's memory to Rachel Colbert to be used for future good in his name.
