Dr. Vaughan H. Weston, 83 of West Lafayette, passed away at 12:32 pm on Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at the IU Arnett Hospital. Born May 1, 1931 in Parry Sound, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late Wilbert and Hilda (Hatherley) Weston. Dr. Weston graduated from the University of Toronto Schools in 1949. Upon receiving the Edward Blake Scholarship in Mathematics from the University of Toronto and the George and Elizabeth Rutherford Scholarship from Victoria College, Dr. Weston graduated with his Bachelor's degree in 1953 and Ph.D. in 1956. During this time he honorably served in the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve. After graduating from the University of Toronto, Vaughan worked at the Radiation Laboratory at the University of Michigan performing research regarding radar scattering , which backed up the science for the Start I Treaty. In 1969, Vaughan started teaching applied mathematics at Purdue University and continued his research until retiring in 2000. During this time he was one of the first Professors to teach graduate mathematics courses on TV to graduate engineers located at industrial facilities in the Midwest. He collaborated with researchers at LTH (Lund School of Technology in Lund Sweden) and KTH (Royal School of Technology in Stockholm) involving time dependent inverse scattering. After retirement Vaughan devoted his time to art joining the Wabash Artist Alliance. He was fortunate to have his artwork displayed at many shows locally as well as in the surrounding area.
Dr. Weston married Jacquelyn Rose "Jackie" Naylor on August 7, 1954 in Toronto and she survives. Vaughan was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and lived at Westminster Village where he enjoyed being a resident and participating in all the activities offered there.
Surviving with his wife are three sons, Dr. Mark Weston (Barbara) of Tampa, FL, Dr. Allan Weston of Joplin, MO, and Brian Weston (Margie) of Walnut Creek, CA, a daughter, Charlotte "Jane" Everette (Douglas) of McLean, VA and eleven grandchildren, Lauren Arce, Kathryn, Andrew, Alex, Anastasia, Betsy, Caroline, Scott Weston and Sarah, Hannah and Ian Everette. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia and Wanda. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, August 16, 2014 at St. John's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Bradley Pace officiating followed by a celebration of life at Westminster Village from 2 to 4 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Westminster Foundation or St. John's Episcopal Church.
