Leroy C. Young, 81

Crawfordsville - Leroy Clifton Young age 81, formerly of the New Richmond area died at 2:17 a.m. Friday, February 3, 2012 in Hickory Creek at Crawfordsville. He was born April 30, 1930 in Unionville, IN the son of the late Otis and Isabell Thompson Young. He was married to Mildred Robinson Young in Bloomington, IN on June 3, 1950 she survives.

Leroy graduated from Unionville High School in 1950. He and his wife moved near New Richmond in 1954 where they began dairy farming. They remained on the farm until 1986 when they moved to Jamestown and he began working for Perdue Turkey Farms. In 2010 they moved to Crawfordsville.

Leroy had been actively involved with the Montgomery County Pork Producers, on the board of directors for Milk Marketing, Coal Creek Townships 4-H Boosters. He had also served as the Dairy Superintendent at the Montgomery County Fair for many years. Their family received the Lenore Matthews 4-H Family of the Year award in 1983. Leroy had been a 10-year 4-H member in Monroe County. Farming was both a vocation and avocation for him. He enjoyed woodworking and often could be seen at the Livestock Auction Barns in Lebanon, Veedersburg and Rockville, where he enjoyed attending.

Survivors include: a son, David (Dawn) Young of Linden. Two daughters, Jennifer (Paul) Richardson of Indianapolis and Janet (Earl) Heide of Linden. Four brothers, Helon Young of Scranton, PA, , Paul Young of Gretna LA, Carol Young of Lake City, FL, Herman Young of Unionville, IN. Three sisters, Annabell Nicholson of Medford , OR, Catherine Robertson of Unionville, IN and Luvilla Osborn of Unionville, IN. 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews also survive. Preceding him in death along with his parents are two daughters: Cheryl Ann Geiger in 1997 and Kathy Lynn Verhey in 2002 and two great-grandchildren.

Visitation hours are Monday, February 6, 2012, 10:00 a.m.-11:00 a.m. at Family & Friends Funeral Home of Wingate. Funeral services at 11:00 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Mike Whitacre officiating, burial to follow in New Richmond Cemetery.
