W.O. Smith, 87

Wilmer "W.O." Smith, 87, of Rantoul, Illinois, died at 5:16 a.m. Saturday, November 10, 2012, at Heartland Health Care Center, Paxton, Illinois.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, November 16, 2012, at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 E. Pells Street, Paxton with Rev. Dr. Ken Crawford officiating. Burial will follow in Ludlow Twp. Cemetery, rural Rantoul with military honors by members of the Ludlow, Rantoul and Paxton American Legion Posts.

Visitation will be one hour before the funeral service Friday at the funeral home.

Mr. Smith was born November 25, 1924, in rural Ludlow, Illinois, the son of William O. and Martha O. Whitcomb Smith. He married Helene Hunn, May 21, 1960, in Rantoul. She preceded him in death August 13, 2001.

Mr. Smith is survived by two sons, Wayne O. Smith of Glenwood Springs, CO, Brett H. (Tammi) Smith of Champaign, Illinois; four grandchildren, Julia R. Smith, William O. Smith, John H. Smith, Peter A. Smith; two sisters, Anna Lou Gibbs of Paxton, and Mary (Carl) Martin of Ludlow.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.

Mr. Smith attended Ludlow Schools and graduated from Paxton High School. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Rendova in the Pacific during World War II. He was president and co-owner of Magic Glass, Inc. Lafayette.

He was a member of the Ludlow Christian Church, the Ludlow American Legion Post 518 and the Paxton Masonic Lodge No. 416 A.F. and A.M. He enjoyed fishing, boating and gardening. He was known for his keen sense of humor.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church of Rantoul or the University Baptist Church of Champaign.
