Edna Lucille Wharton, 94, a life-long resident of the Lafayette area, peacefully passed away on the morning of November 14, 2012, at Westminster Village where she had made her home for the past 14 years. She was born Edna Lucille Taylor in Brookston on October 24, 1918, the daughter of the late John and Bessie Widmer Taylor. Edna graduated from Brookston High School in 1936. She was married to Robert "Bob" Wharton on April 28, 1939 in Lafayette and they became the parents of two sons, Richard "Dick" Wharton and Randall "Randy" Wharton. Over the years Edna worked for the Business College, Lafayette Journal & Courier, as head cashier at Standard Grocery, and as a realtor at Parkside Real Estate. Edna enjoyed playing Canasta, Yahtzee, and reading her daily Journal and Courier.
Edna is survived by her brother, Gib Meyers and his wife, Margo of Battle Ground; a sister-in-law, Lois Meyers, of Battle Ground; six grandchildren, Kelcey (Angie) Wharton, of Birmingham, Ala., Darren (Tracey) Wharton, of Evansville, Heather (David) Mays, of Newburgh, Amy (Eric) Delaney, of Portland, Ore., Christy (David) Gray, of Mason, Ohio and Andrea (Tom) Mulhearn, of Annandale, Va.; daughter-in-laws, Charlene Wharton, of Newburgh and Patricia Wharton of Sarasota, Fla.; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob (November 10, 1978), and her two sons, Dick (March 3, 2002) and Randy (May 20, 2002). She was also preceded in death by her brother, Ernie Meyers, who passed earlier this year, and two great-grandchildren, Amber Mays and Timothy Wharton.
Funeral services will be held at Hippensteel Funeral home at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 17th; Pastor Greg Eberhard officiating. Visitation for friends and family will be from 1 to 2:00 p.m. Saturday. Interment will follow at Rest Haven Memorial Park.
