Robert H. "Bob" Conner, 75, of Delphi, died Sunday-Mar 31, 2013 at 12:45am at his residence. He was born October 2, 1937, in Fairmount, IN, to the late Charles E. & Dorothy Everhart Conner. His marriage was to Judith Ann "Judy" Talbott, in Marion, on Aug 3, 1958, and she survives. He graduated from Marion High School in 1955, and earned his Bachelor & Masters degrees from Ball State University in 1962, 1965 & 1967. During his 35 years in the education field, Mr. Conner taught at Geneva, South Adams & Bluffton schools, and was the Director of Guidance at Delphi Community High School, from 1971 until his retirement in 1997. He was the "voice of the Oracles" during basketball & football games at DCHS for over 20 years. In 1992, he was hired as the first girls varsity softball coach at Delphi. In all, he coached for eight seasons. On January 14, Mr. Conner was honored by the Delphi Community School Corp. board of trustees, naming the Delphi Girls Softball complex; Bob Conner Field.
Mr. Conner was active in many organizations, events and boards in the Delphi Community. He served the Delphi Lions Club for 45 years, including serving as a director, secretary/treasurer, tail twister, vice president and president. He supervised the volunteer clean-up effort for Delphi's flood of 2003, and was awarded both the W.P. Woods Fellow, Indiana Lion's highest honor, and the Melvin Jones Fellow, the highest honor given by Lions International for his efforts. He was the co-chairman of the Lions Independence Day parade for several years. He served one term as a Carroll County Councilman, and served as president of Delphi's Park Board and the Carroll County Emergency Management advisory board. He also served on committees of Carroll County at the Crossroads, at its inception, and was past president of the Carroll County Family Health Clinic advisory board. He also belonged to the Carroll County Retired Teachers, and JUNTO, a social club. He served on the City of Delphi Board of Works for several years. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Delphi, where he served as Deacon, Session member and Sexton, and sang in the church choir for many years.
In 2001, Mr. Conner and Lois Powlen, of Burrows, began singing at the church and were well received. Other churches, nursing homes, and assisted living facilities, as well as special events, were added to their singing schedule. They were familiar performers at Old Settlers, Fourth of July, and Christmas parades. They sang under the name of "Senior Class", until Lois passed away in 2008. Bob continued to visit the facilities until the fall of 2010, when he decided it was time to "retire" from the stage.
Surviving: wife Judith Ann "Judy" Conner of Delphi; son Kevin Conner, girlfriend Ray Ellen Johnson of Fishers; daughter Kim & Keith Rishel of Delphi; grandchildren: Ashlee Flora, Abbee & Ryan Finn, Andrew Flora, Allee & Anthony Ropp, Allbanee Flora, Kolin Conner, Keaton Conner, Jamison Conner, & Madison Rishel; great grandchildren: Havyn, Tylee, Silas, & Cooper; sister Judy & Jim Carey of Marion; uncle Jim "Bud" & Marty Everhart of Jamestown, NY.
Services: friends may call Wednesday from 4-8pm at Abbott Funeral Home-Delphi. Funeral service Thursday 10:30am at the First Presbyterian Church-Delphi, where he will lie in state 1 hour prior to his funeral, Rev. Bill McLean officiating.
