Janet Irene Dieter, 76

Janet Irene Dieter, 76, of Kentland, passed away at 5:09 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2013.

She was born September 17, 1936, in Morocco to the late Paul and Opal (Rush) Merriman. She was raised in Colfax Township, where she attended Colfax Center School and graduated from Mt. Ayr High School.

She was in 4-H for ten years, participating in sewing and baking. In 1951, she won Grand Champion in Clothing at the Newton County Fair. She went on to model her outfit at the Indiana State Fair Dress Review.

Coming to Kentland in 1954, she worked for Sears and Roebuck for five years. During this time she met John Dieter, the love of her life, and they were married on April 19, 1958. He survives.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the St. Joseph Women's Society.

She dearly loved her family and she enjoyed sewing and reading.

After all the kids were in school, she went to work at Kentland Elementary School as a teacher's aide for three years. From there she worked at the Kentland Bank, retiring in 1999, after 25 years.

Surviving with her husband are children, Joe Dieter (wife: Mary) of The Colony, Texas, Jacqueline Winger (husband: Terry) of Kentland, John Allen Dieter of Lafayette; and daughter-in-law, Pam Dieter of Kentland.

Janet loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren, Kirsten Dieter, Katarina Dieter, Jason Dieter, Kelli Hughes (husband: Kyle), Jessica Winger, Olivia Podell (husband: Jason), and Matthew Winger; great-grandchildren, Logan Dieter, Kylli Hughes, Konner Hughes, Carter Podell, and a step-great-grandson, Bradyn Hughes.

Also surviving are two sisters, Gayle Williams (husband: Jack) of Plano, Texas, and Pat Osburn (husband: Bob) of Jefferson City, Mo., along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, James David Dieter; and a nephew, Timothy Brian Osburn.

Friends may call from 4:00-8:00 p.m. CDT, Monday, April 29, 2013, at Stitz-Clapper Funeral Home of Kentland. Rosary services are to begin prior to visitation at 3:45 p.m. CDT.

Funeral Mass 11:00 a.m. CDT, Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at St. Joseph Catholic Church of Kentland. Father Robert Bernotas to officiate. Interment to follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Kentland.
