Richard P. Holmes, 75, of Lafayette, passed away on Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at IU Health Arnett Hospital. Born May 14, 1938 in Lafayette, he was the son of the late Brigadier General Ernest V. Holmes and Mary R. (Griggs) Holmes. He was a 1956 graduate of Lafayette Jefferson High School and attended Purdue University. He honorably served in the U.S. Army.
Richard married Shirley Masters on June 4, 1960 in Lafayette and she survives. He served on the Lafayette Police Department for 15 years and then as a manager and district manager for Emro Marketing before retiring.
He was a former member of St. John Episcopal Church where he served as an acolyte, and is a current member of Faith Ministries.
Richard was a life member of NRA, a member of the FOP, and The Varmint Hunters Association, Inc. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was also an avid Purdue sports fan and Chicago Cubs fan. He shot for the Lafayette Police Department Competition Shooting Team and individually won numerous trophies and awards. He enjoyed writing letters, poems, and stories and has an article soon to be published in "Predator Magazine." He also enjoyed watching movies and had an entertaining personality.
Surviving with his wife are his three children, Tony Holmes (wife, Kimberly) and Julie Foss (husband, William) both of Lafayette and Chrissy Hagerty (husband, Paul) of Cocoa Beach, FL; and a sister, Roberta Smith of Lafayette. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Matt Holmes, Ashley Justice (husband, Brandon), and Sharli Lavier (husband, Matt); step-grandchildren, Lindsay Leon (husband, Patrick) and Ashley Robledo (husband, Tyler); great-grandchildren, Leela and Matty Lavier and Elijah Justice; and step-great-grandchildren, Jacob Justice and Caleigh Leon. He was preceded in death by a brother, E.V. Holmes, Jr.
