Paul-Michael "Mike" Panderanga Fernandez, 28, of West Lafayette, passed away unexpectedly and from natural causes in his home on Saturday, August 31, 2013. Born October 18, 1984 in Chicago, IL, he was the son of Tony and Paulette (Fernandez) Hayek. Paul was raised in Chicago and was a 2002 graduate of Whitney Young High School. Following graduation, he came to West Lafayette and attended Purdue University in the School of Aeronautical Engineering for two years and at the same time was active in Navy ROTC at Purdue. In 2004, he became a missionary with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, serving in Vancouver, British Columbia for two years, returning to West Lafayette in 2006. Paul married Celeste N. Darland on May 15, 2009 in Washington, DC, and she survives. For the past two years, Paul worked as an analyst and technician for Salud Revenue Solutions in Lafayette. He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, First Ward, in West Lafayette. Paul enjoyed everything associated with Star Trek and loved the time he would spend with friends and family.
Surviving with his wife, Celeste, and his parents, Tony and Paulette, is his younger sister, Emilie-Antoinette Fernandez Hayek of Chicago, his wife's father and his wife, Mikel and Carri Darland of Lafayette, and his wife's mother, Linda Terrell of Lafayette, his wife's siblings, Charissa Darland of Lafayette, Nick Gran of Lafayette, Cerene Allen (husband, Casey) of Battle Ground, Amber Gilbert of San Diego, CA, Kate Gilbert of Indianapolis, Seth Darland of Lafayette, Ben Darland of Lafayette, and Luke Darland of Lafayette, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation 5-8 p.m. Thursday at Hippensteel Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service at 2:00 p.m. Friday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints, First Ward, 3224 Jasper St., West Lafayette with Bishop Chad Allred officiating . Burial to follow at Spring Vale Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Paul's name may be made to a College Fund to be established for his sister, Emilie-Antoinette Fernandez Hayek.
