Clyde J. Freshour, 88, of Greenwood, IN passed away Wednesday, August 20, 2014. He was born October 13, 1925 in Springfield, OH to the late Clyde Sr. & Dorothy (Welch) Freshour. A World War II Navy veteran, Clyde honorably served his country aboard the LST 419 stationed in Kisarazu, Japan in the South Pacific. During his military service he earned the Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, & the Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal.
On March 22, 1947, he married Julianne "Judy" Kirchner. She preceded him in death on October 30, 2008. Together, they shared 61 wonderful years of marriage.
Clyde initially worked for Crowell-Collier Publishing Co. in Ohio before moving with Judy first to Indianapolis and then Greenwood, IN. He spent 29 years working for Cornelius Printing Co., in Indianapolis, retiring in 1985 as Shipping & Receiving Manager. After retirement, he gave 25 years of service to Greenwood Parks and Recreation in various positions including four years as President. During his time on the parks board, he helped acquire land for six parks, developed eight new parks, built the Greenwood Community Center, and completed multiple plans to map out the city park's future. Upon retiring from the Park's Department, Clyde received an honor from the mayor for his dedication and service.
Clyde was a former member of the Lucky Squares Square Dance Club and the Indiana Dance Association serving on the board for both. He was a member of the VFW, Masonic Lodge, Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church, and a proud participant of the Indy Honor Flight program in 2013. He enjoyed playing cards, traveling & watching Cincinnati Reds baseball. Above all, Clyde cherished his time spent with his friends & family.
He is survived by his two children; David (Nancy) Freshour of Lake Jackson, TX; and Diane Freshour of Lafayette, IN; one half brother, Jack (Shirley) Freshour of Springfield, OH; three nieces; Sandy Smart, Patricia (Marianne) Kirchner, and Jackie Finney (Jerry); his companion, Barbara; and special friends Barney & Doris Bornman.
Friends may call from 2pm-6pm, Sunday, August 24th at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St., Greenwood, IN. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, August 25th at 10am, at Our Lady of Greenwood Catholic Church, 335 S. Meridian St., Greenwood, IN. Interment will follow at 3pm at St. Mary's Cemetery, 2122 Old Romney Rd., Lafayette, IN.
