John Herzog Obituary

John M. Herzog, 77, of Jacksonville, passed away after an extended illness on Wednesday, Jan. 8th, 2014, at his home surrounded by his family. A native of Hancock, N.Y., John enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps as a Private in 1955. His military career spanned the majority of the Cold War period and included three tours of service in Viet Nam. Having risen through the ranks, John retired as a Captain in 1975. In 1986, he retired for a second time from his career with Lowes of Jacksonville.

John's dedication to his community did not wane after his retirements. He continued to serve his community by volunteering with the Onslow County Board of Elections for over 10 years.

As an avid out-door enthusiast, John enjoyed his retirement by spending much of his time hunting, fishing, camping, and metal detecting. He was also prolific in woodworking and spent many happy hours in his woodshop.

In later years, John received much enjoyment spending quality time with his seven grandchildren, passing along his knowledge to them of fishing, metal detecting, and duck feeding.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Gloria Herzog; son, Kenneth Herzog of Fredericksburg, Va.; daughter, Deborah Lehman of West Palm Beach, Fla., daughter Nancy Gilmore (Thomas) of Fayetteville, Tenn., son, Steven Herzog (Tracy) of Charleston, S.C.; brother, Dave Herzog (Josie) of Hancock, N.Y.; six grandsons, one granddaughter, and one great-granddaughter.

A time of visitation and celebration of memories with the family will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11th at Jones Funeral Home, 303 Chaney Avenue, Jacksonville, NC 28540 with a Celebration of Life Service to immediately follow at 7 p.m. with Chaplain Eddie Phenix officiating.

A private Inurnment Service with Full Military Honors at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 110 Montford Point Road, Jacksonville, NC will follow at a later date.

In lieu of floral arrangements, the family has requested that donations In Memory of John M. Herzog made to: The Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517 Topeka, Kansas 66675 or woundedwarriorproject.org.

I am sadden to hear of John's passing, he was my boss at Camp Lejeune during my duty there in 1974, We went fishing often after work and his wife would cook dinner for me on several occasions. I lost contact with him after my discharge but with the invention of the internet it made possible to look up friends easier. He was a great man, marine, and friend. By deepest condolences to the family for your lost. My prayers are with you

John was my boss in the Marine Corp while I was stationed at Camp Lejeune and we spent many afternoons and weekends fly fishing. He taught me many things, He and his family treated me like family. I am sorry for your loss, he was a great man. He will be missed. I wish I could have been there to show my respect.

So very sorry to Kenny and the entire Herzog family and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Herzog always treated me with kindness and respect even while I bored them to tears with my stories while they were trying to watch TV.
