Winford worked for Dupont in Kinston for 31 years and farmed. After retiring he started selling vegetables and eventually decided that his cabbage collards were the hit and began selling them far and wide in 1984. This is when he became known throughout the area and beyond as the "collard man". He continued to work in this until his health forced him to turn over the daily operations to his son-in-law Kenneth even though right up until the end he was still able to offer his suggestions and advise on how things needed to be done. Even though he was not as much hands on he still enjoyed seeing so many wonderful people/customers who became his friends. The family would like to thank everyone for any little gesture that was done for our family and especially for our dad. The visits were priceless and something he always enjoyed. We would also like to express our deep appreciation for all the staff at Davita who was his family 3 days a week for almost 4 years and for Continuum Home Care and Hospice who came in at a special time in his life. The family will receive friends Monday evening from 6 to 8 PM at Jones Funeral Home, Richlands Chapel. Flowers are welcome or memorials may be made to Davita Dialysis/Kidney Foundation or Continuum Home Care and Hospice. Electronic condolences may be left for the family at www.jonesfh.org and at JDNews.com.
