Ernestine McDonald

Ernestine Clara McDonald, 96, was born to Milton Ernest Everson and Grace (Cary) Everson on Aug. 27, 1916, in Neligh, Neb. Ernie, as she was known, resided in Jacksonville, NC, from 1960, to Feb. 19, 2013.

Ernie is a World War II veteran who served in the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps in Bremerton, Wash., and will be buried at sea.

Ernie lived in service to country, family and community as a Navy nurse, homemaker and volunteer. She enthusiastically landscaped, painted oils, sewed fine needlework, painted ceramics and hand-tied fleece blankets.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 35 years, John A. McDonald, who served in the U.S. Navy for more than 30 years.

Survivors include three children, four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren: Ernie's daughter Judy (McDonald) French and her husband David French of Centennial, Colo., grandson Brian French of Chandler, Ariz., and granddaughter Kristen French of Denver, Colo.; daughter Joyce McDonald and her husband Ken Fisher of Reno, Nev.; and son, John McDonald and his wife Chrysisse of Knoxville, Tenn., grandson, James McDonald and his wife Georgia of Knoxville, Tenn., and their children, great-grandchildren, John, Chrysi, Michaela, Nikolas and George; and granddaughter, Sister Akylina of Saxonburg, Pa.
